👩🍳 Instructions (using phyllo):
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Prep the filling of your choice. For apples or cherries, mix and set aside to let excess juice drain. For túró filling, just stir everything together.
- Layer and Fill:
- Lay 3–4 phyllo sheets on a damp towel, brushing each layer with butter/oil.
- Sprinkle some breadcrumbs on the top sheet to absorb moisture.
- Spoon filling along one edge of the phyllo and gently roll up like a jelly roll.
- Place seam-side down on the baking sheet.
- Bake:
- Brush the top with more butter/oil.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and crisp.
- Cool & Dust:
- Let cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar.
- Slice into generous pieces and serve warm or room temperature.
🍽️ Traditional Serving Tip:
Hungarians often enjoy rétes with no extra toppings—the filling and thin, crisp pastry are the stars. But a spoonful of sour cream or whipped cream on the side isn’t frowned upon either. 😉

Would you like the traditional homemade dough version too — the kind you stretch over a whole tablecloth like Grandma used to do? I can walk you through that magic too. 😊
