🇭🇺 Rétes – Traditional Hungarian Strudel

👩‍🍳 Instructions (using phyllo):

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prep the filling of your choice. For apples or cherries, mix and set aside to let excess juice drain. For túró filling, just stir everything together.
  3. Layer and Fill:
    • Lay 3–4 phyllo sheets on a damp towel, brushing each layer with butter/oil.
    • Sprinkle some breadcrumbs on the top sheet to absorb moisture.
    • Spoon filling along one edge of the phyllo and gently roll up like a jelly roll.
    • Place seam-side down on the baking sheet.
  4. Bake:
    • Brush the top with more butter/oil.
    • Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and crisp.
  5. Cool & Dust:
    • Let cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar.
    • Slice into generous pieces and serve warm or room temperature.

🍽️ Traditional Serving Tip:

Hungarians often enjoy rétes with no extra toppings—the filling and thin, crisp pastry are the stars. But a spoonful of sour cream or whipped cream on the side isn’t frowned upon either. 😉
