Homemade Flatbread

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon dry yeast
  • 1 cup (250ml) warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil

Step 1: Preparing the Dough

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy. This indicates the yeast is active.
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a small well in the center.
  3. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
    • Add the frothy yeast mixture and the oil to the flour. Using your hands or a spatula, mix until the dough comes together.
  4. Knead the Dough:
    • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a little flour as needed.
  5. Let the Dough Rise:
    • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Allow it to rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours or until it doubles in size.

Step 2: Shaping the Flatbreads

  1. Divide the Dough:
    • Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release any air bubbles. Divide it into equal portions (about 8–10 balls) and roll them into smooth, round shapes.
  2. Flatten the Dough Balls:
    • On a lightly floured surface, use your hands or a rolling pin to flatten each ball into a disc about ¼-inch thick. The size of the flatbreads can vary depending on your preference.
