Kürtőskalács (Chimney Cake) Recipe 🍩🔥

This Hungarian chimney cake is a beloved street food known for its crispy, caramelized sugar coating and soft, airy inside. Traditionally, it’s baked on a rotating spit over an open flame, but you can make it at home using simple kitchen tools! 😊

Let’s make some golden, sugary, and cinnamon-scented Kürtőskalács that will transport you straight to the streets of Budapest! 🇭🇺✨

🛒 Ingredients:

For the Dough:

✅ 3 ½ cups (450g) all-purpose flour 🌾
✅ 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast 🍞
✅ ½ cup (120ml) warm milk 🥛 (not hot, just warm)
✅ ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar 🍚
✅ 1 large egg 🥚
✅ 4 tbsp (60g) unsalted butter, melted 🧈
✅ ½ tsp salt 🧂
✅ 1 tsp vanilla extract 🌼

For the Coating:

✅ ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar 🍚
✅ 1 tsp cinnamon (optional) 🌿
✅ ¼ cup (50g) melted butter 🧈

Toppings (Optional but Delicious!):

✨ Crushed nuts (almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts) 🥜
✨ Cocoa powder 🍫
✨ Shredded coconut 🥥

👩‍🍳 Directions:

1️⃣ Activate the Yeast

🍞 In a small bowl, mix the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tbsp of sugar. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy. This means the yeast is alive and ready to work!

2️⃣ Make the Dough

🥣 In a large bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, salt, egg, vanilla extract, melted butter, and yeast mixture. Mix everything until a dough forms.
💪 Knead for 8-10 minutes (by hand or with a mixer) until smooth and elastic. If it’s too sticky, sprinkle a little flour; if too dry, add a tiny bit of milk.
