Almás Pite; Hungarian Apple Cake🇭🇺

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Prepare the dough:

  • In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and lemon zest.
  • Cut in the butter until mixture resembles crumbs.
  • Add the egg and sour cream, mix until a smooth dough forms.
  • Divide dough into two equal parts, wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

2. Make the apple filling:

  • Mix grated apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, and cloves.
  • Let sit for 10 minutes, then squeeze out excess juice.
  • Sprinkle semolina or breadcrumbs over the base dough before adding filling to prevent sogginess.

3. Assemble:

  • Roll out one half of dough to fit a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) pan.
  • Lay dough in greased or parchment-lined pan.
  • Spread the apple filling evenly.
  • Roll out the second dough half and place on top. Prick with fork.

4. Bake:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until golden.

5. Cool and finish:

  • Let cool completely. Dust generously with powdered sugar.
  • Slice into squares or bars and serve.

💡 Tips:

  • Let it rest a few hours or overnight — it slices beautifully when cool.
  • Add a handful of raisins or chopped walnuts to the filling for extra tradition.
  • Serve with tea or coffee for a perfect afternoon treat.

🍎✨ Almás Pite – Hungarian Apple Cake
This old-fashioned slab pie is what Hungarian grandmas made with love and fresh orchard apples. Fragrant, tender, and just sweet enough.
🍂 A bite of nostalgia from the heart of Hungary.
