👩🍳 Instructions:
1. Prepare the dough:
- In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and lemon zest.
- Cut in the butter until mixture resembles crumbs.
- Add the egg and sour cream, mix until a smooth dough forms.
- Divide dough into two equal parts, wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
2. Make the apple filling:
- Mix grated apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, and cloves.
- Let sit for 10 minutes, then squeeze out excess juice.
- Sprinkle semolina or breadcrumbs over the base dough before adding filling to prevent sogginess.
3. Assemble:
- Roll out one half of dough to fit a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) pan.
- Lay dough in greased or parchment-lined pan.
- Spread the apple filling evenly.
- Roll out the second dough half and place on top. Prick with fork.
4. Bake:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until golden.
5. Cool and finish:
- Let cool completely. Dust generously with powdered sugar.
- Slice into squares or bars and serve.
💡 Tips:
- Let it rest a few hours or overnight — it slices beautifully when cool.
- Add a handful of raisins or chopped walnuts to the filling for extra tradition.
- Serve with tea or coffee for a perfect afternoon treat.
