Instructions:
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- Add the warm milk, egg, butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until the ingredients combine into a sticky dough.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 8-10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a tablespoon of flour at a time, but don’t overdo it – the dough should remain soft.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise for 1-2 hours in a warm spot until it doubles in size.
2. Shape the Chocolate Buns:
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to remove air bubbles.
- Divide the dough into 10-12 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball.
- Flatten each dough ball into a small disk. Place a few chocolate chips or a piece of chocolate in the center of the disk.
- Wrap the dough around the chocolate filling and pinch the edges to seal. Roll the filled dough into a smooth ball.
- Place the buns seam-side down on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving some space between them.
3. Second Rise:
- Cover the buns with a towel and let them rise again for 30-40 minutes until they puff up.
4. Bake the Buns:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Brush the tops of the buns with the beaten egg for a shiny, golden crust.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown and cooked through.
- (Optional) Brush the hot buns with melted butter or a light sugar syrup for added shine and flavor.
5. Serve:
- Let the buns cool slightly before serving, as the chocolate filling will be hot.
- Dust with powdered sugar for a finishing touch or drizzle with melted chocolate for an extra indulgence.
Tips:
- Storage: Store leftover buns in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for up to a month.
- Reheating: Warm the buns in the oven or microwave for a few seconds to soften and melt the chocolate inside.
