Classic Lasagna with Layers of Rich Sauce and Cheese

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Meat Sauce

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until soft, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Add the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.
  4. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Season with oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
  5. Let the sauce simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.

Step 2: Make the Béchamel Sauce

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.
  3. Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
  4. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the sauce thickens.
  5. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Set aside.

Step 3: Assemble the Lasagna

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  3. Place 3 lasagna sheets on top of the sauce.
  4. Add a layer of béchamel sauce, followed by another layer of meat sauce.
  5. Sprinkle with a portion of the shredded mozzarella.
  6. Repeat the layers (pasta, béchamel, meat sauce, mozzarella) two more times.
  7. Finish with a generous sprinkle of mozzarella and grated Parmesan on the top layer.

Step 4: Bake the Lasagna

  1. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  3. Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before slicing to allow the layers to set.

Tips for Perfect Lasagna

  • Make Ahead: Prepare the meat sauce and béchamel a day in advance for quicker assembly.
  • Cheese Variations: Add ricotta or cottage cheese for an extra creamy texture.
  • Vegetarian Option: Swap the meat sauce for a mix of sautéed vegetables like zucchini, mushrooms, and spinach.
