doughnut recipe

Instructions:

1. Make the Dough:

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk with 1 teaspoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, salt, and nutmeg (if using). Add the yeast mixture, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  3. Mix everything together until the dough comes together. Then knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise for about 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

2. Shape the Doughnuts:

  1. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to remove any air bubbles. Roll the dough out on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.
  2. Use a round cutter or a large glass to cut out doughnut shapes. For the hole, use a smaller cutter or bottle cap to punch a hole in the center.
  3. Place the doughnuts and doughnut holes on a floured baking sheet or tray, cover them with a towel, and let them rise again for about 30-40 minutes.

3. Fry the Doughnuts:

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Make sure there’s enough oil to fully submerge the doughnuts.
  2. Carefully drop the doughnuts into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd them. Fry for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
  3. Remove the doughnuts with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

4. Make the Glaze:

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Add more milk if you prefer a thinner glaze.
  2. Dip each warm doughnut into the glaze, covering one side, and set it on a rack to let the glaze set.

5. Serve:

  • Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving.
  • Enjoy your fresh, homemade doughnuts! You can also sprinkle them with sprinkles or cinnamon sugar for an extra touch.

Tips:

  • For a chocolate glaze: Melt 1/2 cup of chocolate chips with 2 tablespoons of butter and mix with 2 tablespoons of milk and powdered sugar for a rich chocolate glaze.
  • Filling options: Try filling your doughnuts with jam, chocolate, or cream before frying, using a pastry bag with a filling tip.

I hope you enjoy making these doughnuts! Would you like some ideas for toppings or filling? 😄
