For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon gold or russet potatoes work best)
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup milk (or more, depending on desired consistency)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
Mashed Potatoes:
- Peel and cut the potatoes into chunks. Place them in a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil.
- Cook the potatoes for about 15-20 minutes or until they are fork-tender.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
- Mash the potatoes using a potato masher or an electric mixer.
- Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper, then mash again until smooth and creamy. Set aside and keep warm.
Ground Beef and Gravy:
- In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it apart with a spatula. Once browned, drain any excess fat.
- Add the chopped onions and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir to combine. This will help thicken the gravy.
- Slowly pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened.
- Optional: Stir in butter for extra richness.
Serve:
- Scoop a generous portion of mashed potatoes onto a plate.
- Pour the beef and gravy mixture over the mashed potatoes.
- Serve with extra pepper or herbs, if desired.
This hearty meal is perfect for a cozy dinner. It pairs well with green beans or steamed vegetables!
