Hungarian Layered Cabbage (Kolozsvári Rakott Káposzta)

Ingredients

Meat Layer:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground pork (or a mix of pork and beef)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • ½ tsp caraway seeds (optional)
  • 2 tbsp oil or lard

Other Layers:

  • 1 lb (450g) sauerkraut, rinsed and drained (if too sour)
  • ½ lb (250g) smoked sausage (like Hungarian kolbász), sliced
  • 1 cup (200g) cooked rice
  • 1½ cups (350g) sour cream
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup (120ml) milk
  • 1 tbsp flour
