Hungarian Layered Cabbage


Instructions

1. Prepare the Meat

  1. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  3. Stir in the ground pork, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and caraway seeds. Stir well and remove from heat.

2. Prepare the Sauerkraut

  • If your sauerkraut is too sour, rinse it under cold water and drain well.

3. Make the Sour Cream Mixture

  • In a bowl, whisk together sour cream, egg, milk, and flour until smooth.

4. Assemble the Layers

  1. First layer: Spread half of the sauerkraut in a greased baking dish.
  2. Second layer: Add half of the cooked rice.
  3. Third layer: Spread half of the cooked ground meat.
  4. Fourth layer: Add half of the smoked sausage slices.
  5. Repeat all layers, finishing with sauerkraut on top.
  6. Pour the sour cream mixture evenly over everything.

5. Bake

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes until golden.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve hot with fresh bread or pickles on the side.
  • Enjoy with extra sour cream on top!
