👩🍳 Instructions:
1. Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8×8 or 9×9 inch square baking pan.
2. Cream Butter & Sugar
In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
3. Add Wet Ingredients
Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the molasses and buttermilk until smooth.
4. Mix Dry Ingredients
In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, and salt.
5. Combine Everything
Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients. Stir until just combined. Fold in nuts or raisins if using.
6. Bake
Pour the batter into your prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
7. Cool and Serve
Let cool in the pan. Dust with powdered sugar or serve with a bit of whipped cream, vanilla sauce, or honey.
📝 Ashley’s Notes:
- In Hungary, this cake would often be served with a side of sour cherry preserves or homemade plum lekvár.
- For a festive twist, add orange zest or a splash of dark rum to the batter.
- Perfect alongside a cup of strong coffee or spiced tea.
